COMMUNITY & LEADERSHIP ENGAGEMENT

University Leadership Involvement

Throughout my time at Methodist University, I have been actively involved in leadership roles that promote professional development, advocacy, and service within the occupational therapy community. Through my involvement in organizations such as the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) and the Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD), I have contributed to initiatives that raise awareness about occupational therapy’s role in promoting occupational justice and equitable healthcare access. Serving in leadership positions has allowed me to collaborate with peers and faculty to organize service initiatives, support professional engagement, and foster an environment that encourages advocacy and inclusion within healthcare. These experiences have strengthened my leadership, communication, and organizational skills while reinforcing my commitment to advancing occupational therapy practice and supporting underserved populations through education, service, and advocacy.

Community Leadership - Falcon Children’s Home

My long-standing involvement with Falcon Children’s Home has been one of the most influential experiences shaping my passion for occupational therapy and advocacy. Through volunteer work and community engagement with this organization, I have supported initiatives that assist children navigating trauma, instability, and foster placement transitions. Working alongside community members and staff provided insight into the complex challenges many children face, including disruptions in education, emotional regulation, and access to supportive services. These experiences deepened my understanding of the long-term impact that adverse childhood experiences can have on development and participation in daily life. Witnessing the importance of supportive environments and consistent mentorship reinforced my commitment to trauma-informed care and strengthened my desire to advocate for systems that better support children and families within foster care communities.

Coaching & Youth Mentorship

In addition to my academic and community leadership roles, I have also been actively involved in coaching and mentoring young athletes through private softball pitching instruction. Coaching has provided meaningful opportunities to support youth development beyond athletics by fostering confidence, perseverance, and goal-oriented thinking. Through individualized instruction, I help athletes develop complex motor skills while also encouraging emotional resilience, self-discipline, and positive self-efficacy. This experience has strengthened my ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet individual learning styles, provide constructive feedback, and support personal growth in young individuals. Coaching aligns closely with occupational therapy values by emphasizing participation in meaningful activities, skill development, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential within supportive environments.

Softball Coaching Philosophy

My role as a private softball pitching instructor aligns with foundational OT principles—specifically therapeutic use of self, motor learning theory, injury prevention, and individualized teaching strategies. My coaching approach centers on adapting each lesson to the athlete’s learning style, emphasizing step-by-step skill acquisition, emotional support, and safe body mechanics. These experiences translate directly into occupational therapy practice by strengthening my abilities in rapport building, activity analysis, individualized instruction, and promoting confidence and resilience in young athletes.
